PILLAR · WARRANTY & MOBILE SERVICE

Does mobile oil change void your warranty?

The short answer: no, as long as the service is documented.

It's the most common question we get. Drivers love the idea of mobile oil changes but worry the dealership will use it as an excuse to deny a warranty claim.

Federal law disagrees with the dealer. Here's what the rules actually say, what manufacturers actually require, and how MAXI keeps your warranty intact.

THE LAW

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

Passed in 1975, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects consumers from manufacturers tying warranty coverage to specific service providers. In plain English: a manufacturer cannot void your warranty just because you didn't service the vehicle at a dealership, unless they provide that service or part for free.

It's the federal law that lets independent shops, mobile services like MAXI, and your own driveway compete with the dealer service lane.

WHAT MANUFACTURERS ACTUALLY REQUIRE

Maintenance, on schedule, with the right oil.

Manufacturers don't require dealership service. They do require:

  • 01Maintenance performed on schedule (per your owner's manual)
  • 02The correct oil specification (full-synthetic, manufacturer grade)
  • 03The correct filter (OEM-grade)
  • 04Documentation that the service happened

If you can prove all four, the manufacturer has no grounds to deny a warranty claim related to maintenance.

WHERE DEALERS PLAY GAMES

What to watch for.

  • 01 / 04

    Verbal pushback

A service writer might say ‘you really should service here for warranty’. That's a sales pitch, not a policy.

  • 02 / 04

    Missing records

If you can't prove maintenance, you lose the argument. This is why documentation matters more than where you got the oil change.

  • 03 / 04

    Wrong-spec oil

If a budget shop puts conventional oil in a vehicle that requires full-synthetic, the manufacturer has a legitimate complaint. Always verify oil spec.

  • 04 / 04

    No CARFAX trail

Some shops don't report to CARFAX. If yours doesn't, request copies of every service receipt and store them.

FAQ

Common warranty questions.

  • 01What if my dealer denies a warranty claim because I used MAXI?
Send us the denial in writing and we'll generate a complete VIN-linked service report (including CARFAX confirmations, oil spec, and filter records) to dispute the claim. Magnuson-Moss is on your side.
  • 02Do I need to keep my own records?
We keep them for you, but it's smart to save the email receipts we send. Belt and suspenders.
  • 03Is MAXI Shield required?
No. But it's the strongest written warranty-protection product we offer. Learn more.
  • 04What about extended warranties or service contracts?
Most extended warranties have stricter documentation requirements than the manufacturer warranty. We meet or exceed those, but always read your contract for any provider-specific language.
  • 05What if my car is leased?
Leased vehicles have the same warranty rules. Some lease contracts require dealer service, so read yours carefully. If it does, we can still service the vehicle, but plan to also visit the dealer per the contract.
